Remembering Commodore Philip Haselton Jr.
Past Commodore Philip Haselton Jr. has sailed on, leaving in his wake a litany of experiences and contributions to the history of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club and to sail racing and cruising in general. Commodore Haselton served the club in 1959 and 1960 for his formal years of responsibility but he was active in many efforts for years before and after. Phil died last week at the age of 89.
Commodore Haselton, along with his Vice Commodore, Bill Danforth, presided over much of the acquisition and plans for purchase of the Oak Grove Property and the eventual move to West Harbor. An avid racer, he owned three BHOD’s, Hardalee II, Windward II and Windward III.
Our sympathy is extended to the Wilders and the rest of Phil’s family here in the Harbor and from away in New Jersey and elsewhere. It was an honor to have known and worked with Past Commodore Haselton.
News about upcoming summer activity is beginning to pop to the forefront more and more each day. Last week Jim sent out a notice about new opportunities for Flower Ladies (and men) which will be occasioned by our longer season in 2014. These extra weeks will offer many new opportunities and challenges for member participation and they are not limited to social events, including dining room employment, an extra week of Junior Program activities, more sailing and racing, and more extensive use of the waterfront, moorings and launch service.
