He was born in 1925 in Orange, N.J., son of Philip Hyatt and Cynthia Baldwin Haselton, of East Orange, N.J. and West Boothbay Harbor. While serving in the Army (1944-1946) he studied civil engineering at Pennsylvania Military College and the University of Maine at Orono. Following his discharge from the Army, he attended Cornell University, graduating in 1948.

Throughout his life, Philip enjoyed wonderful summers at his family’s West Boothbay Harbor home. He was a champion sailor, loved cruising and served as commodore of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club. In 2006, Philip and Shirley moved permanently to Boothbay Harbor.

Philip served as president and chairman of Detex Corporation, a security hardware company co-founded by his father in 1923. For over 50 years, he served on the board of trustees of Drew University in Madison, N.J.

He supported a number of organizations throughout his life, and was a founding member of the Boothbay Region Historical Society. His lifelong interests included antique clocks, genealogy and local history. He published several books on his family and on the history of early watchclocks and timepieces used in the security business.

Philip was predeceased by his wife Shirley in 2006.

He is survived by two daughters, Kay Wilder and her husband Matt of West Boothbay Harbor and Carol Pfister and her husband Paul of Effingham, N.H.; son, Philip N. Haselton and his wife Kerry of Bernardsville, N.J.; daughter-in-law, Cyndi Ames Haselton, wife of his late son Gary Haselton of Mallett’s Bay, Vt.; and his good friend, Barbara Rumsey. He also leaves his faithful canine companion, Greeley. One of Philip’s favorite activities was sharing stories with his 11 loving grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family memorial will be held this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Boothbay Region Historical Society, P.O. Box 272, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538, or the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.
