Randy Burr wins ProTruck Challenge at Wiscasset Speedway
Wiscasset Speedway celebrated fast cars and 250 years of freedom on Independence Day, hosting a loaded Group 2 racing program that included all weekly divisions plus the Crown Vics and the visiting ProTruck Tour with fireworks to boot.
The racing action kicked off with a 30-lap feature for the Creative Cleanouts Sport Modifieds. Alec Brown and Adam Chadbourne went head-to-head for the early lead, with Chadbourne pulling ahead with the advantage. Kyle Hewins was all over Alec Brown for second in the laps that followed, clearing Brown on lap 6. Hewins tailed Chadbourne before diving to his inside on lap 11, powering to the lead as Chadbourne got bent out of shape. Kyle Hewins sailed into his third victory of the season while Adam Chadbourne and Alec Brown completed the podium.
The ProTruck Tour made their long-awaited comeback to Wiscasset Speedway on Saturday night following a multi-year hiatus. Following group time trials where Tyler Chapman topped the leaderboard, the top 6 drivers did a redraw for the 55-lap feature, putting Todd Taylor and Jason Paquette on the front row. The two drivers were neck & neck in the opening laps of the race, with Todd Taylor powering ahead with the lead. Jason Paquette got the upper hand following an early-race restart, pulling ahead with the lead as Tyler Chapman quickly made his way to second.
John Pereira took a spin on the backstretch on lap 23, resulting in a quick yellow. This made way for Tyler Chapman, who powered to the lead. Meanwhile, Randy Burr was quickly maneuvering through the field, climbing to second. Following a red flag on lap 36, Chapman and Burr were door-to-door on the front row. Although Chapman held the early advantage, Burr powered to his inside on lap 42, challenging for the top spot before overtaking the lead. In a last-ditch effort, Chapman gave Burr a bump before backing down but Randy Burr remained resilient, taking home his second straight win on the ProTruck Tour. Jason Paquette followed, completing the top 3.
Ray Dinsmore held the early lead in the 25-lap feature for the Portland Glass Strictly Streets, but Tyler Jordan and Zack Emerson joined the lead pack at halfway, making it a 3-way battle for the top spot. It became a freight train (and anyone's race) in the laps that followed as Chris Burgess tailed the leaders closely. Zack Emerson was the first driver to make a big move, jumping out of line with just 4 laps to go. He powered to the lead and never looked back, securing the victory. It was a drag race for second, with Dan Trask beating Tyler Jordan to the line by a miniscule .003 seconds to pick up the runner-up finish.
Heat race winner Keegan Murray powered to the early lead in the 25-lap feature for the Dale's Cash Fuel Roadrunners. Multi-time winner Gavin Gerow was all over the leader by lap 5. Murray did all he could to hold onto the top spot, even sliding through the infield grass, yet somehow maintaining the lead. While battling for position, the two drivers made contact on lap 7, resulting in an early exit for Gerow. Jason Sears was the next driver to take a shot at the leader, successfully overtaking the spot on lap 10. Eric Powell and Keegan Murray made contact on the backstretch with 10 laps to go, resulting in a caution. Jason Sears maintained command on the restart while Karigan Glasier and James Grover nestled in behind him. Sears held off the competition in the closing laps of the race, picking up his second career win in the division while Karigan Glasier and James Grover completed the podium.
Kolby Wescott maintained the early advantage in the 15-lap shootout for the Carver's Driving Academy Crown Vics as "Boss Hogg" Dave St. Clair quickly powered to second. St. Clair made his way to Wescott's inside on lap 8 and although Wescott got bent out of shape, he was able to save it. After backing down for a handful of laps, Dave St. Clair took another stab at it with 3 laps to go, overtaking the lead as Karson Hewins followed in succession. Hewins dived down the track, giving Dave St. Clair a sizable nudge with just one lap to go. The contact was enough to cause St. Clair to come to a rolling stop on the backstretch, handing Hewins his first victory in the division while Kolby Wescott finished second.
The night concluded with a 40-lap feature for the Wood Pellet Warehouse Late Models. Ben Nile took off with a sizable lead early and maintained command following an early-race restart as Nick Morton and Ben Burgess battled it out for second behind him. Ben Burgess won the battle while Nick Morton sacrificed third to Jonathon Emerson. After winning a heat race, Will Collins made a surprising exit to the pits at halfway. The blows kept coming for the heavy hitters as Jonathon Emerson's machine blew up, coming to slow on lap 26. Ben Nile slipped up the track on the restart, making way for Ben Burgess, who powered to the lead as Nile descended down the leaderboard. While battling for position, Steve Barker and Ross Harlow made hard contact with just 4 laps to go, resulting in an immediate red flag. Ben Burgess jumped ahead on the restart and held onto it, picking up his first career Late Model win. Nick Morton (first career Late Model podium) and Shane Clark completed the top 3.
Saturday's race program was jam-packed with exciting side-by-side racing action in all 6 divisions, with nearly every race coming down to the wire. These drivers sure are getting fans out of their seats this season and hope to keep the excitement rolling into the next Group 1 race program this Saturday, July 11th.
In addition to all weekly divisions, the Ladies Acceleration Tour will be joining the fun on Saturday. The green flag flies at 5 p.m. and as always, adult grandstand admission is just $5 while kids 6 and under get in for free.
