Ocean Point Column: Best weather of the summer so far
If you were fortunate enough to vacation this past week, you have experienced spectacular weather. It seems day after day has been great whether boating, enjoying the beach or just walking along the shoreline.
There are many to thank for chairing our activities last week. Many thanks to Sarah Dawson who organized a nature walk last Monday morning and later that evening hosted the S’mores night.
Thank you to Annie Berg and Leah Fisher for organizing the kid’s picnic at Grimes on Tuesday; it was a beautiful evening and the kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
As always, the game of Right, Left, Center drew a big and boisterous crowd on Tuesday evening hosted by Jim and Lisa Rush, thank you to them.
A large crowd gathered on Wednesday night to listen to a presentation by Lucy Ann Spaulding on the early years of her ancestors immigrating from Newfoundland to Ocean Point in 1866. Alexander Van Horn and his wife had nine children, one of whom was Norman Van Horn. Norman met and married Lucy Amira and they purchased 120 acres of land along Linekin Bay and Ocean Point Road.
Lucy Ann is the great -granddaughter of Norman Van Horn. Many of you may recall or have read that Norman serviced the residents of Ocean Point delivering ice to them and also greeted passengers arriving at the Point and delivering them and their belongings to their cottages in his horse drawn wagon.
Thank you to Lucy Ann for sharing her family’s heritage with us and to John Waldman for his assistance.
Don’t miss the next presentation of Ocean Point history Aug. 5 which will continue with the story of other early residents of Ocean Point.
Thanks to the Driscoll family we all thoroughly enjoyed a scrumptious breakfast of pancakes and sausage early Saturday morning. A big thank you to our chefs Robert Driscoll, Cara Pond,Tim Mahoney and Will Bertrand for lending their expertise in the kitchen and of course to our waitstaff.
The Brown Family ball game grill was held on Sunday with the family serving up delicious burgers, dogs, salads and desserts. This event is particularly meaningful as their dad Jim spent every Wednesday evening teaching many of us softball.
Many Brown family members are here vacationing and include: Bob and his children CJ and Carolyn, Barry and his wife Kim and daughter McKenna, Bill’s son Kai and Bruce and Betsy Plummer and their son Matt, daughter Nicole and their grandsons Noah, Jack and Luke.
Team Nichols defeated Team Dawson 13-5 in Sunday’s game; Gerry Plummer hit a 3-run homer.

In last week’s column I reported on the wedding of Allie Houston and her husband Landon Barnes. I inadvertently had his surname wrong and want to correct that error.
Allie’s mom Terri reports that Allie and Landon are excited to begin their married life together and appreciate the love and support of family and friends. Congratulations and best wishes to you both.
Enjoy the beautiful weather and have a great week!
