‘No Kings’ rallies in Lincoln County
On Saturday, in their hundreds, thousands, and millions across the U.S., Americans peacefully demonstrated their opposition to the chaos of the Trump administration, the war of choice in Iran, ICE assaults on civil liberties, the shredding of decency in public life, and the seemingly never-ending attempts to tear apart the fabric of our democracy.
Lincoln County citizens came out in force, with 850 on the Wiscasset bridge and 700 on the Newcastle/Damariscotta bridge, the largest rally on this bridge and in the Twin Villages in living memory (and some of us are quite old and have long memories).
Despite a Trump supporter yelling obscenities through a loud hailer in rally participants faces, the events were entirely peaceful. No one rose to the bait. Local police and sherif’s deputies quietened him down.
In Wiscasset, Lincoln County Indivisible deployed its ‘Signs of Democracy’ on the approaches to the bridge. This is a set of signs which express core aspects of a functioning democracy, all of which are currently under threat. Such things as ‘free and fair elections’, ‘no voter intimidation’, ‘respect for election results’, ‘no pardons for criminal loyalists’, ‘due process for everyone’, ‘respect for immigrants’, ‘no arbitrary ICE abductions’, ‘protecting LGBTQ+ rights’, and ‘no corruption in government’. In all, there are 24 unique signs in the set.
Both rallies demonstrated the deep well of commitment locally to pushing back against an administration which is increasingly unpopular and out of touch, and which is now attempting to force voter suppression measures through Congress in a desperate attempt to stave of electoral defeat in November.
The rallies expressed the conviction that ‘we the people’ will prevail against the agents of chaos. There will be a trail of damage to clean up, but ultimately our democracy will emerge strengthened and ready to take on the challenges of the next 250 years.
