In addition to the opportunity to enroll in a variety of classes each term, Coastal Senior College members may participate in free activities on Mondays. “Mystery Mondays” meets on the first Monday of each month, from October to June, at 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Zoom.

This year readers will explore mysteries set in Maine or written by Maine authors. The first book, to be discussed on Oct. 5, is “Frozen River” by Ariel Lawhon, a novel based on the 1785-1812 diary of Martha Ballard, a midwife living in Hallowell. (Historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich introduced that diary to the world in “A Midwife’s Tale.”) In this fictional adaptation, Martha investigates the murder of a man found frozen in the Kennebec River. Members of the Mystery Monday group, affectionately known as “the squad,” discuss not only the cases, but also the structure and characterization used by the authors.

The “Any Body Can Sing” group meets on the third Monday of each month, from September to June, at 10 a.m. to noon at the Community Hub of the Midcoast Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 38 Elm St. in Damariscotta.

Each meeting begins with familiar songs, sung in unison, chosen to fit the theme of the month. Group members choose song themes for each month. The theme for the Sept. 21 meeting is Broadway Songs. Songs from “Oklahoma,” “The Sound of Music,” “The King and I,” “South Pacific,” “My Fair Lady,” “The Music Man” and “West Side Story” will be featured.

Participants choose monthly themes, and song suggestions from group members are always welcome. No musical experience is necessary. Experienced singers are warmly welcomed as well. Choral director Susan Borg offers helpful pointers about comfortable singing as we go along. Your voice is welcome exactly as it is. You may be surprised by what your voice can do when it is supported by a singing community!

Participation in “Mystery Mondays” and “Any Body Can Sing” is open to members of Coastal Senior College free of charge, but registration is required. Information about the two activities, membership and registration is available at coastalseniorcollege.org.
