After careful consideration and extensive evaluation of available resources, the Maine Hospice Council Board members have made the difficult decision to cease operations and close the organization effective Oct. 17, 2026.

Referring to her one-on-one work with people, public speaking, and consulting, MHC Executive Director Kandyce Powell, RN, MSN said, “I will continue to be available to anyone searching for hospice and end-of-life care resources at either (207) 882-4032 or KandycePowell65@gmail.com.”

Over the past 35 years, the MHC has worked to advance the mission of promoting universal access to quality end-of-life and palliative care through innovation, creativity, education, advocacy, and collaboration. The organization has been a leader in advocating for, training, and educating providers and communities about hospice and palliative care.

All of the Council’s work has been grounded in identified needs. Leadership and staff listened to community members-including healthcare providers-to identify needs and gaps in end-of-life and serious illness care, in order to develop meaningful programs.

This approach guided extensive outreach to underserved and disenfranchised populations, including financial support, development, and education for the Maine State Prison’s comprehensive Hospice and Palliative Care Program.

Notable initiatives over 35 years including, but not limited to, policy development; program development such as the Hospice Veteran Partnership and the Maine Pain Initiative; community listening sessions; international human rights presentations and program collaborations; successful grant writing, including support through the Robert Wood Johnson Community/State Partnership; and serving as a host site for numerous academic interns, doctoral students, and other learners.

Throughout its years of operation, the MHC has been honored to collaborate with donors, volunteers, staff, community partners, and supporters who make this important work possible.

“I acknowledge the dedicated work of the Council for all of the years under the leadership of Executive Director Kandyce Powell. The Council has been able to provide services to Maine people because of Kandyce’s commitment and perseverance,” said MHC Board President Alicia Murray, DNP, MSN, RN, CHPN.

“This decision was not made lightly,” Murray added. “We are incredibly proud of the impact our organization has made and deeply grateful to everyone who supported our mission. While closing our doors is difficult, we celebrate the lives touched, the relationships built, and the lasting contributions made to our community.”

The Maine Hospice Council extends its heartfelt appreciation to its employees, volunteers, board members, donors, grant foundations, community partners, and the individuals and families it has served. Their commitment and support enabled the organization to pursue its mission for more than 40 years.

Although the MHC is closing, the values and impact of its work will continue through the individuals, organizations, and communities that carry the mission of quality end-of-life care forward.
