KEVIN BURNHAM/Boothbay RegisterA penalty stroke lifted into the top left corner of the goal with just under two minutes to play gave Lisbon the lead and the visiting Lisbon Greyhounds held on to defeat the Boothbay Region Seahawks, 2-1, on Perkins Field Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 23.
The Class C South contest featured the undefeated Greyhounds (now 5-0) against the division-leading Seahawks (now 5-2). The loss dropped Boothbay to second place as Winthrop jumped to first place as of Thursday morning. Lisbon is in fourth place.
The eventual winning stroke – a one-on-one play between an offensive player against the goalie seven-feet in front of the goal –was delivered by Julia Quigliaroli with 1:53 to play after an infraction in front of the goal by the Seahawks.
After no goals in the first 15-minute quarter, Lisbon scored its first goal at 8:07 of the second quarter on a shot by Maddie Earle. Boothbay tied the game about four minutes later with Zuri Smith’s goal after an assist from Sophia Gatnar.
The Seahawks led in penalty corners with eight (five in the second quarter) while Lisbon had two.
Weather permitting, the Seahawks are next scheduled to host Oak Hill (1-6) on Monday, Sept. 28 at 3:30 p.m.
