Join your local garden club for a timely talk on winter sowing
Wintersowing is an easy and cost-effective propagation technique to start seeds outdoors in winter.Seeds are planted in protective, vented containers (often recycled milk jugs) that act as mini-greenhouses, allowing them to experience natural cold stratification, rain and temperature fluctuations. This method promotes high-percentage germination of hardy seedlings, which are naturally acclimated to the environment and ready for spring, without needing indoor lighting or hardening off.
The program will include a summary of the basics of winter sowing. Following that, we’ll have a hands-on activity for everybody attending with containers, soil and seeds provided. Everybody gets to go home with their own jug of sown seeds! It will still be early enough in the season to do your own winter sowing, if desired.
This timely program is on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at approximately 2:30 p.m. at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church (32 Emery Lane, Boothbay Harbor). The public is invited to join us for refreshments which will be served at 1:30 p.m.
