Garden Club to host evening meeting on square foot gardening
The Boothbay Region Garden Club will be hosting the first of two evening meetings this year on Wednesday, April 8. If you have been interested in learning more about your local Garden Club but can'tattend daytime meetings, this is your chance to come and find out what we are all about! Refreshments will be served starting at 5:30 p.m. and the membership meeting will begin at 6 which will include a brief overview of the many ways to get involved in the club.
At ~6:30, Master Gardener John Fromer will present on Square Foot Gardening. Those of you with limited space, or limited areas with sun, will leave with some useful tips. Square Foot Gardening is the practice of growing in dense plantings insuring maximum harvests and healthy plants. This style is great for raised beds and small spaces but works well in larger gardens too and is perfect for people who have limited space and time to garden.
John Fromer, a Maine Master Gardener Volunteer for 26 years, has a lifelong passion for horticulture. Trained in perennial garden design by Frederick McGourty of the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Fromer co-founded Appleton Ridge Flower and Vegetable Farm in 1998 with his wife Kathy. The farm supplied gourmet vegetables and floral arrangements to restaurants, inns, caterers, and specialty shops, and offers perennial garden design and consultation services. Fromer’s expertise has been featured in national gardening magazines and on the Georges River Garden tours. He conducted workshops for MOFGA and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service, and teaches spring and summer gardening courses at Merryspring Nature Center, where he serves as program director and trustee. He also leads classes at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and the Midcoast School of Technology, andfrequently presents to garden clubs and organizations throughout Maine. In addition to his teaching roles, Fromer worked in the Perennial department at Plants Unlimited in Rockport in 2020 and oversaw organic seedling production in 2021. His commitment to education and outreach impacts over 1,200 students and hundreds of adults annually. With extensive hands-on experience, Fromer continues to pursue new knowledge and innovative gardening methods.
The mission of our club is to promote interest in the art and practice of gardening, horticultural education and the beautification of the Boothbay Region. We serve the Boothbay peninsula and the surrounding area through gardening projects, programs, education and scholarships—fostering deep friendships through working together to make a difference in our environment. We also have a lot of fun!
Perhaps you will want to join our Creative Gardening Committee which plans much appreciated activities for the residents of St. Andrews Village; or our Program Committee which determines the speakers who will present at our monthly meetings.
