Frederick E. Johnson
Frederick Elliot Johnson, 79, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026 in Savannah, Georgia surrounded by Hospice Care and his loving family.
Born on June 22, 1946 in Glendale, California, he later moved with his parents and brothers to Boothbay Harbor, Maine where he grew up and graduated from Boothbay Region High School.
After a brief stint in the Merchant Marines, he attended Wentworth Institute of Technology where he graduated in 1968 with honors and as class president.
Fred served in the Vietnam War as a member of the U.S. Army Security Agency. In the early 1970s, Fred and his wife Laurel spent time in Taiwan with the Army Security Agency. His service shaped his lifelong appreciation for discipline, resilience, and the importance of helping others grow. This capability and skill of developing the potential in others was a very distinct passion for Fred; one that brought him tremendous joy and satisfaction.
Frederick built a respected career in technology training and human resources, working with United Technologies, Xerox, Digital Equipment Corporation, and later the venture capital firm New Roads. His work took him across Europe and Asia, and where he became known for his ability to mentor, guide, and develop the potential in others.
In 1989 he graduated from The Harvard Business School’s Executive Education Program. In May of 2000, Fred graduated from Skidmore College, with a bachelor of science degree.
In retirement, he discovered a love for pottery and creating unique pieces that reflected his creativity and curiosity. He had a deep affection for his family pets and cared for many dogs over the years with his wife Laurel.
Fred continued his service to others by becoming the director of his HOA security committee where he lived on Dutch Island, Savannah.
Frederick is survived by his wife, Laurel Huggins Johnson; daughters Alyssa Johnson and (partner Anthony Carlton Cooke of Eugene, Oregon), Erica Johnson Ronald and (husband Tyler Ronald); grandchildren Hazel, Samson and Maeve Ronald of West Hartford, Connecticut; brothers Nick Johnson and wife Springli Johnson of Fairfield, Iowa, and Chuck Johnson and wife Gail Johnson of Williamsburg, Virginia, along with cherished nephews and nieces and extended family members and friends.
