Four adults earn HiSET, qualify for free tuition
Boothbay-Wiscasset Regional Adult Education celebrated the graduation of four adult learners with a ceremony Jan. 8, in the library at Boothbay Region High School. Graduates include Brody Giles, of Boothbay Harbor; Madison Lorrain, of Boothbay; Jeffrey Mckinney, of Newcastle; and Kyla Warren, of Edgecomb.
These young adults made the push to finish their High School Equivalency Tests (HiSET, formerly GED) by the end of December to qualify for free tuition at Maine Community Colleges, which is set to expire.
“Even if they are not sure post-secondary education is the next step, or do not go right away, the community college benefit is there for them thanks to their hard work,” said Director Raye Leonard.
The HiSET is a series of five subject area tests, including reading, math, social studies, science, and writing. Madison and Kyla began their preparation last year. After the summer break, both returned to the program ready to complete official tests. Brody and Jeffrey enrolled in early fall, and made quick work of preparing for and passing the exams.
The graduation ceremony culminated in cake, conversation, and photos.
Boothbay-Wiscasset Regional Adult Education offers high school completion, career and college advising, workforce preparation, and enrichment courses to adults in the Boothbay-Boothbay Harbor CSD and Wiscasset School District, and the region at large.
