Edgecomb selectmen research veterans’ graves flag etiquette

Memorial Day is over, but it is still firmly on the minds of Edgecomb selectmen. June 9, Chairman Forrest Carver said American flags placed on local veterans' graves should be removed within two weeks after the holiday. The town's past practice is leaving them on well after the holiday. Selectman George Chase supported sticking with the current practice. "I think we should leave them out. I think it looks nice," he said.
Selectmen are hoping a collaboration with American Legion Post 36 in Boothbay will settle any future questions surrounding grave etiquette. Each May, local sixth graders have joined a selectman in placing flags on the North Edgecomb Cemetery veterans' graves. Selectmen plan on inviting Legion members to participate. Selectmen tabled making a decision on whether to remove flags on graves until receiving input from the American Legion.
In another flag-related item, Selectman Cara Gaffney volunteered to place the town's flag at half-mast when required. Gaffney will download an app which informs her when the flag's status changes.
In other action, selectmen discussed two possible locations for an Edgecomb Historical Society storage shed. In recent years, the Society has stored artifacts at Big Al's Self Storage in Boothbay. Two locations on town property are under consideration for hosting a 12-foot-by-16-foot shed. Both parcels are near the town hall. Selectmen want input from the Historical Society prior to deciding.
Selectmen meet next at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 23 in the conference room.
