A travesty
Dear Editor:
Let me be clear at the outset – this is not a political editorial, but one dealing with character and moral integrity. Recently, comments posted by Graham Platner (which he has since deleted) have been presented in both state and national news regarding military personnel (these posts and many others can be viewed on The Maine Monitor.) Platner calls Army soldiers ____ trash. He also publicly posted that he wished another soldier in his unit “ ____ ____ didn’t deserve to live,” and that it was unfortunate that the Taliban were not more accurate shooters. This soldier was wounded four times and received a Purple Heart for his efforts to protect his unit.
Platner uses vulgar language and names in these mocking posts that cannot be printed, but underscore his disdain for the men and women who serve our country. These posts are representative of many others which demonstrate a pattern of filthy, profane commentary.
Platner was questioned by a reporter this past weekend, asking whether he owed an apology for his posts. No apology came forth (video is available on Yahoo News.)
On Memorial Day, we honored the sacrifice of our military, especially those having given their lives (my nephew, Joel House, being among them, who was killed in Iraq.) It is a slap in the face to all the military, and to the family and friends of those who failed to return home. To hear ads and drive by signs promoting Platner throws salt in the still open wounds. Platner’s vile disrespect is reprehensible, regardless of any political considerations. It is a travesty that such an unfit individual can be considered for an important leadership position in our state and country.
