Dr. Barclay Shepard awarded the VA Centenarian Recognition
Dr. Barclay Shepard was awarded the VA’s Centenarian Recognition on June 6 by Tracye B. Davis, Medical Center Director – VA Maine Healthcare System, Michael Brawn – Acting Director of the Veterans Benefits Administration, Togus Regional Office, and VA Maine’s Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE) Chief, Sarah Goodman. The certificate was presented to Dr. Shepard just ten days before his 100th birthday and while he was surrounded by his family.
The program was initiated in 2020 by former Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie to recognize Veterans reaching the milestone of 100 years old with a signed letter from the Secretary and a coin. Dr. Shepard’s certificate from VA Secretary Douglas A. Collins reads as follows:
Dear Mr. Shepard:
On behalf of the Department of Veterans Affairs, it is my pleasure to wish you a happy 100th birthday. We honor our Veterans and celebrate your life’s accomplishments.
Our Nation honors your service in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Americans enjoy the blessings of peace and liberty because of patriots like you who answered the call to defend our Nation. We remain grateful to you and your generation for helping defend democracy and shaping the world we live in today.
The accomplishment of your military career is held in the highest esteem. You are a source of wisdom and inspiration to all. I join your VA health care team, family, and friends to celebrate you and your service to America.
We send warm wishes to you for good health and cheer. Please accept the enclosed coin as a token of our gratitude and appreciation. May God bless you.
Sincerely,
Douglas A. Collins
VA developed the Centenarian Award as a special initiative to honor American Heroes who have reached the age of 100. Many Veterans receive their award at their local VA clinic during a scheduled appointment.
