Down East Yacht Club closes season in style and looks ahead to winter gatherings
As the Maine boating season came to an end, the Down East Yacht Club (DEYC) cruised into its 60th year with the ever-popular Haul-Out Party at Blake’s Boat Yard in Boothbay Harbor, drawing more than 125 enthusiastic boaters. A heartfelt thank-you goes to Past Commodore Amy Goodwin and Dusty Goodwin, owners of Blake’s Boat Yard, for having graciously hosted the ever-growing crowd year after year.
The festivities featured a mouthwatering barbecue feast catered by Footbridge Brewery, two celebratory cakes, and of course, the club’s own Woody Wagon, fully stocked with libations and a delicious fall themed signature cocktail. The scene was a lively one -- many a sailor could be seen expertly balancing a heaping plate, a full beverage, napkins, and utensils while searching for an open chair!
Commodore Bob Ewing welcomed the group and expressed appreciation for the many volunteers who helped make the event a success. Once again, the raffle prizes for early dues payments proved a big hit, with lucky winners walking away with DEYC swag and bottles of spirits.
As members shared stories and reflections on another wonderful boating season, Fleet Captain Scott Warren and Catherine Plourde circulated invitations to their upcoming October gathering at their home in Spruce Head, and excitement immediately began to build.
With a nod to Halloween, Scott and Catherine hosted a spirited Western Wear Party on Oct. 18, where members arrived decked out in Cowboy Carter fashion -- 10-gallon hats, bolo ties, boleros, plaid shirts, vests, and even a few spurs and lassos made their debut. Facebook lit up with photos of members in full cowboy and cowgirl attire, and the evening proved to be a rootin’-tootin’ good time for all.
A huge thank-you to Scott and Catherine for their warm hospitality and creative flair in bringing the DEYC community together once again!
The Down East Yacht Club (DEYC) may have hauled its boats for the season, but the social calendar is still in full sail!
The next club event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the historic Isle of Springs home of John and Sharon Ryan. Members are encouraged to mark their calendars for this always-enjoyable winter gathering.
The annual DEYC Holiday Party will take place on Saturday, Dec. 6, at Mine Oyster in Boothbay Harbor. The evening will feature good food, festive cheer, and the club’s traditional Yankee Swap -- always filled with surprises, laughter, and plenty of good-natured maneuvering for the most coveted gift of the night.
This year’s celebration coincides with the beloved Lighted Boat Parade, when Boothbay Harbor glows with beautifully decorated boats and a spectacular fireworks finale. Mine Oyster, the cozy waterfront restaurant that it is, offers one of the best viewing spots in town, so guests can enjoy the show right from their tables at the DEYC Holiday Party!
Winter events will continue throughout the season, both in Maine and Florida, so members are encouraged to keep an eye out for upcoming announcements.
And for those longing for warm breezes and turquoise waters, the DEYC Star Clipper Cruise to the British Virgin Islands, March 21–28, 2026, may be just the thing to chase away the winter blues. A group contract is in the works -- members interested in joining the adventure are invited to contact Commodore Bob Ewing or Jeanne Koenig for more information.
Founded in 1965, the Down East Yacht Club brings together boaters and friends who share a love of Maine’s coast, camaraderie, and life on and off the water. If these events sound like fun and you want to dip your toe into the DEYC waters, check into membership at downeastyachtclub.com and click the Member tab. The season never ends when you are a DEYC member!
