On Thursday, April 9 the Boothbay Special Olympics Team traveled to the Bath YMCA for the Area Swim meet of Sagadahoc-Lincoln counties.
The team was ready as they have had dry land and water practices. Mindy Stevens led the group with a first place ribbon for her 25 meter freestyle followed by Blake Chadwick and “Piper” Rankin. Donny Dunning followed with a second place. Ronda LeConte led the 50 meter freestyle followed by Joey Ranco, Danny Miller, Valerie Giles, Vincent Giles, Grace Giles and DeShawn Averill -- all winning a first place ribbon for their 25 meter swimming events.
The athletes did well in their backstroke events as well. Valerie Giles won first for her 50 breaststroke while Joey Ranco took second place.
The relationship team of Joey Ranco Valerie Giles, Deshawn Averill and Grace Giles also won first place. The relay team of Blake Chadwick, Danny Miller, Vincent Giles and Ronda LeConte won a second place.
It was fun and to compete against friends from other teams as well as former Boothbay athletes Tina Peaslee and Dana Albright.
May 1 at Colby College will be the site of the State Competition where the competition could get deep and tough.
