Lang Sheppard, the executive director of Boothbay Region TV, was the speaker at our meeting last week. Lang was introduced by Eric Bertelsen. Eric has become known as the Marv Albert and the Vince Scully of the BRHS Seahawks basketball game broadcasts. Eric works with Lang to provide the play-by-play announcing during the broadcasts which is viewed by the many of us, especially grandparents of players who are not able to attend games.

Lang spoke of the 24/7 broadcasts of the station. Boothbay Region TV inspires, educates, and facilitates video and film-making, not only in the Boothbay region but across the state of Maine. Content ranges from live and archived government meetings, local event coverage, talk shows, short films, performances, and regional promotions. The station offices are located in the YMCA and is funded mainly by cable TV franchise from Spectrum Cable TV and business and charity sponsorships.  The broadcasts can be seen on Spectrum Cable Channel 7 and 1301. They can also be viewed on the station’s website www.boothbaytv.com as well as on youtube.com.

We are lucky to be part of this amazing Rotary Club, one of over 46,000 clubs in the world. Rotary is a world wide organization, but to know Rotary is in over 220 countries with that many clubs is wonderfully surprising.

This week we welcome Nancy Irving, a Rotarian who is going to talk about a Global Grant co-sponsored by the South Portland and the Cape Elizabeth clubs partnering with the Rotary Club of Lugogo Mango Tree in Uganda. Partnering with a local Rotary Club is a requirement of Global Grant, but is also one way to ensure that Rotary Foundation Grants are truly addressing local issues. This Global Grant will help a maternity hospital in Uganda by working with Partners for World Health to ship much needed equipment.  It will also include education and training on site.

Jim Herbold presented the names of three new potential members that had been approved by the board of directors. He also mentioned that the board meetings are held online on the second Monday of every month. Anyone interested in attending a board meeting can contact him to receive an invite. All members are welcome to join. However, next month's meeting will be held on Monday, Aug. 3. 

At the board meeting, Bill reported the great success our Foundation had last year. The barn grossed over $92,000 in sales for the year. The barn has been very busy lately. Members are needed to work on Saturdays, as well to help pick up all the community's donations. Pickups are done on Mondays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. If you can help, please show up at the barn at those times. If you have a pickup truck, please bring it. Laurie can also add you to the pickup email list.  

It was also announced that the board recently approved donations to the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library, Veggies to Table and the Twin Villages Food Bank.

The Rotary Club Barn is open every Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m. rain, shine, hot or cold. Always great stuff donated by our generous neighbors. If you have donations, call or text 207-619-1417 to arrange pick up or drop off.  Your donations go back to our community and the world. 

Join us any Thursday at 6 p.m. for dinner and a program. We are a diverse group of people who work and have fun together to learn about the world and hopefully make it a bit better. We meet at our Clubhouse at 66 Montgomery Road.
