Maine cartoonist Jeff Pert dies
Maine cartoonist, author and humorist Jeff Pert died Friday, April 4 in Portland. He was 55.
Pert was born November 28, 1958 in Bath and grew up in Winslow.
The self-taught cartoonist was widely known for his cartoons of lobsters, moose and “geezers.” His drawing of a lobster asking his friend Bob how the water is has been reprinted on T-shirts and stickers up and down the coast.
Pert's father, Perleston “Bub” Pert, was a former editor at the Boothbay Register from 1959-61.
Jeff Pert spoke in early 2013 at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library about his experiences in cartooning and how living in Maine influenced his work. During the presentation he said it was hard to imagine going into another line of work.
“The only bad day I have is when I can't come up with anything,” he said during the presentation. “Other than that, it's really hard to have a bad day doing this.”
Pert also published a book, “Cartoons from Maine: How's the Water Bob?”
