Edgecomb Column: Nomination papers available
The Edgecomb Eddy School says save the date! Thursday, March 13 for its Family Zumba and Book Fair. The Book Fair goes from 5 to 7 p.m., the Zumba starts zooming from 6 to 6:30 p.m. A bake sale, several guessing jars and door prizes will be ongoing throughout the evening. Be sure to wear comfy clothes and sneakers.
When the Maine State Ballet came to Boothbay Region Elementary School last week, the entire Edgecomb Eddy student body joined with Southport Central School for a field trip into the glamor of music and dance. Bravo to the Maine State Ballet for touring among the elementary schools.
So here we go down Bravo Boulevard: Dotti Cost is on the winter semester dean’s list at the University of Southern Maine; Ben Halm, a sophomore, is one of Lincoln Academy’s students of the month. Keep up the good work.
Heather Burt, executive director of FARMS (Focus on Agriculture in Rural Maine Schools), has been appointed to the Time & Tide Resource Conservation and Development Council, representing Lincoln County. Time & Tide helps Maine communities develop projects around agriculture, aquaculture and forestry, while conserving and improving natural resources.
The Boothbay Region Land Trust’s theme for 2014 is “Visit Our Preserves.” They include the Kitzi Colby Nature Preserve across the River Road from No. 234, and the Singing Meadow Preserve on Cross Point Road. Do come and enjoy them.
You are going to get right tired of this, but I feel it my duty to keep you aware: Nomination papers for Edgecomb town officials are available from now until 5 p.m., March 26. Twenty-five signatures are needed to qualify. We will be electing one selectman, two planning board members and one school board member, each for a 3-year term, and one town clerk, one tax collector, one treasurer, and one road commissioner, all 1-year terms. Call Claudia Coffin for more information, 207-882-7018, Mondays, 7-9 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1-5 p.m.
Bruce and I have just concluded two very exciting courses from Coastal Senior College in its winter 2014 term. In the morning we learned about “architecture without architects,” a real awakening for us, so now I can’t pass a building without pondering, “Is that a king post truss? A gable roof?”
Our afternoon course was on the First Amendment, exciting for all our interactions on subjects like Citizens United, or the new Hobby Lobby case. Preview of the spring 2014 term’s coming attractions, which include: the history of photography, an examination of the “New Atheism,” Form in Nature and Design, plays by Chekhov, Shaw and Oscar Wilde, “Could Germany have Won World War II?” and, of course, our own good neighbor Bob Brown on “The Maine Lobster Industry, Then and Now.” I urge anyone 55 and older, to call the CSC office at University College at Rockland, 207-596-6906, to ask for a spring 2014 catalog of courses.
Keeping our minds alive at 234 River Road, 207-633-2978 and jocam@tidewater.net.
