As the implementation of the Affordable Care Act approached late last year, causing much concern and confusion, Cheney Insurance in Damariscotta ramped up their operations by launching a new Benefits Division. Now staffed with two full-time Certified Marketplace Representatives, they have helped well over 120 clients to enroll in the Exchange and obtain health insurance in the first several weeks. The majority of these folks have been eligible for subsidized rates, and for some it has been the first time they have ever had health coverage.

“This has been a particularly gratifying expansion of services for us,” commented agency President and CEO Dennis Hilton. “Every day we see folks that are nervous and unsure of the process. Our agents are able to explain options, get them enrolled, and put their coverage in place--all at no extra cost. Now, they know they have a local agent looking out for them.”

Health and benefits veteran Rachel Lachance joined Cheney Insurance in November and now leads their Benefits division. Holly Lemar, who also has a strong benefits background, was transferred internally to help keep up with the demand, and both are meeting with dozens of clients each week.

“We have seen tears of relief, and tears of joy,” said Lachance. “There is a lot of confusion out there, and we are very happy to help clear that up for our clients.”
