Volunteers needed for upcoming events
President Jennifer Page Osman opened the meeting at 6:30 p.m., but, with Rotarians and guests so involved in conversation, it took a while to get everyone seated. Our greeter, Daren Graves, gave the invocation and Steve Salorio, with the help of Tony and Linda, served up a hearty meal of meatloaf, stuffed potatoes, and green beans with ginger cake for dessert.
Craig Tukey volunteered to be steward in July, which was the last opening needed to be filled on Dwight's People Power list. I'm sure he is happy to have that filled out.
President Jen made several announcements including, we need to spread the word on the matching grant the club has put up for the $16,000 home heating fuel challenge, the Soup Bowl Supper to be held on April 3, and the annual Rotary 7-8 grade girls basketball tournament to be held on March 7 and 8. Volunteers are still needed to sign up.
District 7780 announcements are Stuff the Bus on February 22, World Peace & Understanding Dinner that same evening, and the District Assembly on April 12. If you have never gone to a District Assembly, you have a chance to gain a lot of information about Rotary in the six hours of presentations on all the different projects Rotary works on.
Sergeant at Arms Skip collected some happy dollars and sad dollars for the fire at the Marston House. If you remember we worked on that home two years ago as a Rotary project building a ramp and insulating the attic for Rebuilding Together Day.
As a program this week we had the director of the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts Fran Rudoff along with the Board President Elizabeth Kendall and Board Member John Washburn come to update us about the organization. Watershed has been operating with the mission to provide serious artist with time and space to work with clay, as a nonprofit since 1986. Over the years 2000 plus artist have come to Edgecomb from all over the world for two-week residencies where they can work in their chosen field of art. Watershed also does community outreach to schools and senior groups with the Mudmobile.
They hold local fundraisers including our always popular Rotary Soup Bowl Supper and Salad Days the second Saturday in July. Salad Days is a great day long event, you first buy a hand made plate, fill it with lunch made by the staff and local restaurants, listen to live music while you eat, and then you can tour the grounds, take in some demonstrations, buy pottery at the tent sale, or take a chance on winning a donated piece in a raffle where everyone wins something from a well known artist. Watershed has been a positive influence in introducing art to Midcoast Maine for many years and we hope for many years to come.
