Post office updates
Ever wonder just how many Southport residents could fit in the lobby of the Southport Post Office?
Well, probably not ... but, there were about 36 residents at the meeting last week to hear the results of the survey which was mailed to 344 residents. Kathleen Walker, USPS Manager of post office operations, handed out the results from the total number of surveys returned.
After reviewing the surveys and taking into account postal service operational needs, retail hours for our location will likely be: Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with lunch from 11 a.m. to noon, Saturday 9 to 11:15 a.m. This amounts to a total of six retail operating hours daily, a result of 15 minutes less daily.
Kathleen then continued to indicate that there will be some small modifications to the lobby to “enhance” security and then be able to offer lobby hours 24/7. Our “postmistress” Jeannette thought this would probably be implemented by spring or early summer.
Susan Naughton sent the following information to remind all Southport residents of the Annual Winter Walk scheduled for Sunday , Feb. 16 from 3 to 5 p.m. This is a chance to visit with your friends and neighbors and walk off the winter blues. Meet at Jane and John Lunt's house at 44 Joppa Road at 3 for several walk options, none too strenuous. Refreshments will be served after the walk. There is some limited parking at the Lunts’ but additional parking can be found at the Southport Town Hall, a short walk from their home. Questions, call Jane or John at 207-633-2133. If weather issues are a concern, call Lunts or check your email for up-dated information. Hope to see on February 16!
The favorable weather has kept the Southport Central School children skating on the pond. School news: the sixth grade class is planning a trip in the spring to New York and students are busy planning and putting together fundraising efforts. The first one is a Winter Carnival Auction on March 22 at the Southport Town Hall. There will a raffle, soup dinner and a silent auction. Friends, businesses, artists are encouraged to donate items for the auction (they are tax deductible). Student Ryan Hughes can be contacted at 207-315-0347 to pick your “item.” The class will also have a Bingo night and they have an ongoing bottle drive, are willing to do yard work and shoveling for donations. Contact the school and they will arrange any pick-up or service you need. Watch for more information.
Hoorah for the new knee girl, Lynn Schafer, recovering at home and doing well.
Congratulations to Meredith Clapp and Bob Conn; it is their first wedding anniversary. Remember, they were married on Valentine's Day last year at the Southport Memorial Library. A nice love “story” isn't it!
As I write this on Tuesday , a sunny beautiful day with the anticipation of more snow to come. Just remember there are only 44 days till the first day of spring and 32 till daylight saving. (Now go buy some flowers!)
