Special Olympics swim season is completed
The Boothbay Region Special Olympics ended their swim season with two events. First event was the Sagadahoc-Lincoln Area Swimming event held at the Bath Y on April 7. The Boothbay male swimmers in the 22-29-year-old division, Donny Dunning, Vincent Giles and Blake Chadwick brought home a first, second and third in the 25 freestyle.
Eight Boothbay swimmers brought home a first place ribbon for their backstrokes: Grace Giles, Valerie Giles, Ronda LeConte, Deshawn Averill, Danny Miller, Joey Ranco and Donny Dunning. Dana Albright, also a former Boothbay athlete who swims for the Bath Rubber Ducks, brought home a first as well. Tina Peaslee a former Boothbay athlete who also swims for the Bath Rubber Ducks and good friend of Mindy Stevens, swam together in the same race and brought home first and second in their backstrokes.
Brently Maxcy, his first competition in a while, worked to secure a 4th and a 5th place for his flotation races.
Mindy Stevens took home a first for the 25 free.
Ronda LeConte and Grace Giles won firsts in the 50 breaststroke while Joey Ranco and Grace Giles won firsts for the 50 fly. Boothbay's triangle relay team won first as well.
It was a good meet helping to prepare for the larger outstanding competition of the Special Olympics State Aquatics Games. They were held a Colby College in their state-of-the-art Olympic pool on Friday, April 18. Boothbay returned with : 18 gold, three silver, three bronze, eight fourth places and two sixth places
Deshawn Averill delivered the gold winning 50 back in the 22-29-year-old males division winning by 1.05 sec. beating Charlie Saffian from Cumberland who has been on top for several years now. Boothbay’s triangle relay team won gold hands down with Joey Ranco, Valerie Giles, Grace Giles and Deshawn Averill.
Bentley Maxcy took the 15 and 25 float in the 11 and under male division.
Grace Giles won gold for her other two events, the 50 free and the 50 back.
Peter Brewster won the gold in the 25 free males.
Ronda LeConte won gold for her 50 breast and her 50 free.
Joey Ranco won gold for his 50 fly.
Vincent Giles won a gold for his 25 free and the 50 back.
Blake Chadwick won a gold for the 25 back.
