Candlelight service of remembrance at Boothbay funeral home
Simmons, Harrington & Hall’s 17th annual service of remembrance has become a time to reflect on the death of members of our community.
This warm and comforting service at Hall’s on December 7 was led by Pastor Katherine Pinkham, pastor of the Edgecomb Congregational Church. During the program, Pinkham shared her personal reflections about facing our first holiday season following the loss of a family member. She shared how to help yourself during this time and how to cherish our memories, our family, and friends.
The highlight of the program was the candle lighting ceremony. The staff at Hall’s read the names of the community members who died this past year and the family members came forward to light a candle in memory of their loved one or friend. After the names were read, everyone was welcomed to light another candle in memory of other family and friends who have died in the past.
Five candles were also lit by the Hall staff, with the following being read by Pastor Pinkham: “This candle represents our grief. The pain of losing you is intense. It reminds us of the depth of our love for you. This candle represents our courage — to confront our sorrow, to comfort each other, to change our lives. This candle is in memory of the times we laughed, the times we cried, the times we were angry with each other. It is in memory of the silly things you did, the caring and the joy you gave to all of us. This candle is the light of love. As we enter the holiday season, day by day we will remember the special place in our hearts that will always be reserved for you. And this candle is the light of hope. Today and each day as you light your candle, let it remind you of the love and the memories that are yours forever. May the glow of the flame become your source of hopefulness now and forever.”
The families received a personalized glass ornament in memory of their loved one to hang on their Christmas tree as a gift from the Hall family and staff.
Mike Hall, owner of Simmons, Harrington & Hall, said, “This annual service of remembrance has helped many families honor their loved ones, has provided a safe place to express their feelings and ultimately has brought hope to each family. In this Christmas season, cherish your family and friends, and tell them how much you love them and what they mean to you.”
