Wiscasset area Walk for Diabetes held
The Community Walk for Diabetes was held this year on November 2. The reason we hold this walk in November is because November is Diabetes Awareness Month.
This is the second year that we have done this walk and again we had a small turnout but everyone was very excited to be there. The weather held for us and it was a beautiful sunny day. We walked from the Wiscasset High School to the corner of Hooper Street and then returned to the high school.
The gold medal for the largest donation amount was awarded to Deborah Gagnon.
We were walking for a cure for diabetes. At this time, diabetes can be treated with certain oral drugs and insulin, but this is not a cure. It is expensive and requires much time and dedication.
Twenty-six million people are afflicted by this disease in the United States. It costs billions of dollars every year. More people die of diabetes complications every year than die of breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.
We hope to see you next year as we again get together and walk for a cure to stop diabetes.
Donations can still be made at the website main.diabetes.org/goto/wiscassetwalks.
