Down East Yacht Club
It has been a long while since DEYC members were able to celebrate camaraderie and enjoy the beauty of cruising together on the Coast of Maine. But on Saturday, June 27, a small group of members eager to be back on the water, took advantage of the weather and the “Day Tripper” planning of yachtsman Pete Yesmentes to cruise, raft up and enjoy lunch together at Damariscove Island.
The anchor of the raft was Sea Knight, a 30’ Beneteau Trawler Skippered by Ed Lawton with First Mate, Marlene. Potential DEYC members Shawn and Kim Chandler and Mike Bancroft and Laurie Edwards were welcome guests on board. Other vessels in the raft included: Eleanor Yes, a 32’ Lobster Yacht with captains Pete and Eleanor Yesmentes; About Time, a 22’ Center Console with owners and Captains, Rick and Mary Pollak; Sea Dog IV, a 26’ Scout center console owned and Captained by Mike Malgieri and his wife Beth; and Moor Mularky, a 22’ Century, Cuddy Cabin with Captain Jane and First Mate Dana Mulholland. Their guests, P/C Susan Pope and 2020 Fleet Captain, Brent Pope made for a fun day.
Troy and Sandi Hersom, aboard their 36’ Formula, Band Aids, anchored a few feet away. Troy and Ed were happy to shuttle “masked members” ashore on their dinghies where they enjoyed learning about the history of Damariscove, visiting the museum and walking the paths around the island. Damariscove Island is a preserve protected by the Boothbay Region Land Trust.
The party broke up after enjoying lunch and conversations from safe distances.
We look forward to enjoying future events this summer while exercising “safe practices and social distancing.
