Wiscasset boys withstand late Islesboro rally
The Wiscasset boys basketball team jumped out to a 15-0 lead Jan. 24 versus Islesboro Community School, but had to withstand a late Eagle rally. The Wolverines won, 59-51. Wiscasset is now 9-5 and in sixth place in the Heal point standings. ICS falls to 7-6. The Eagles are in fourth place in Class S South.
The Wolverines started with a balanced scoring attack in the first quarter, and led 19-6. Teagan Marr connected on a first quarter 3-pointer and a field goal for five points. Paul Lambert scored six. Julien King and Ben Gapski each scored four in building a first quarter lead.
Wiscasset expanded its lead in the second and third quarters. Wiscasset led 47-28 after three quarters and then withstood an ICS scoring spree. The Eagles outscored Wiscasset 23-11 in the final quarter.
Gapski was the Wolverines' top scorer with 14. Other Wolverine scorers were Marr with nine, Tyler Mank and Landin Shirey with eight each. King added seven. Spencer Smith-Pinkham and Lambert each scored six.
Coach Jamey Roy said his team's three-quarter court trap set the tone for his scoring success early in the game, and again, in the third quarter. "We turned them over, and got quite a few lay-ups which really got us going," he said. "I made some substitutions later in the game and they made a run, and it got interesting."
Wiscasset's victory moved the team from eighth to sixth in the standings. The Wolverines have four games remaining against Searsport (2), ICS and Buckfield. "I think if we win three out of four that should put us in (the tournament)," he said.
Wiscasset travels to Islesboro for the Wolverines' next game Wednesday, Jan. 28 against ICS.
