Winthrop nips Boothbay 2-1 on final play
With no time on the clock after a penalty corner entry, Winthrop senior Gabby Janik received a pass and pushed the ball into the goal to give the visiting Ramblers a 2-1 win over the Boothbay Region Seahawks on Perkins Field, BRHS Sept. 30.
The now 7-1 Ramblers and the now 5-3 Seahawks played evenly throughout the 60-minute contest with defense being a highlight. Neither team had many shots on goal, especially in the first and third quarters.
Winthrop scored first with 6:20 to play in the second quarter on a goal by freshman Addie Daigle. The Ramblers controlled the ball for the first eight minutes of the quarter before Boothbay stepped up its offense.
With just under three minutes to play in the half, Seahawk junior Moriah Smith tied the game. After receiving the penalty corner entry, she shot from about 10 feet from the goal and the ball went past Rambler goalie Cyara Harriman.
In the third quarter, junior Zuri Smith and freshman Mabel Kaler made several defensive stops. Both teams got one open shot at the goal but Winthrop’s shot went wide and Boothbay’s shot by freshman Emma Doucette was stopped by Harriman.
During the last five minutes of the game, Winthrop received three penalty corners, the last coming with four seconds to go. With the clock expired (penalty corners are played out until the defense clears the ball from the scoring zone), Janik scored the winning goal.
Boothbay, which next hosts Mountain Valley (4-2, lost to Boothbay at home) on Friday, had a couple of shots in the final quarter but Harriman stopped both.
