This week we bring you a special one night only presentation of the documentary film “Art is Not A Solace,” welcoming artist Alan Magee and filmmaker David Berez to our stage for a talkback following the film.

“Top Gun: Maverick” - (PG-13; 2 hours, 11 minutes) - After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick finds himself facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it. Screens Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 2 and 7 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 25 at 2 p.m.

“Art is Not A Solace” - (58 minutes; with a post-screening talk-back with artist Alan Magee and filmmaker David Berez) - Best known for his captivating realist paintings, Magee also creates works that delve into the darkest aspects of human nature. His arresting images which comment on corporate greed, on cruelty and gun violence, and on civilian and military victims of war seem at odds with his serene paintings of nature and found objects, but through his distinctive visual language and interconnected themes, Magee suggests that these dual realms are inseparably interwoven. Shot on location, from Pemaquid Point to the streets of Berlin, the film examines the ways in which art can address the great challenges we face as a society. Thursday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m.

“Elvis” - (PG-13; 2 hours, 39 minutes) - Experience the life and music of American music icon, Elvis Presley (Austin Butler), from his childhood to becoming a rock and movie star in the 1950’s, seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the most significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge). Playing at 2 and 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, Saturday, Aug. 27, Wednesday, Aug. 31; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28 and Thursday, Sept. 1.

Coming soon: “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” – Sept. 1 and 2; “Where the Crawdads Sing” – Friday, Sept. 2
