This week at the Harbor Theater
"Verity" - (R; 1 hour, 57 minutes) - Based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel, "Verity" is a seductive psychological thriller where nothing—and no one —is quite what it seems. Struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) is hired by Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett) to complete the bestselling book series of his wife, renowned author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), who is unable to write following a devastating accident. Lowen moves into the Crawfords’ remote estate to sort through Verity’s unfinished work, but instead discovers what appears to be a deeply disturbing autobiographical manuscript filled with shocking confessions and unsettling secrets. As Lowen becomes increasingly drawn to Jeremy and consumed by what she has uncovered, the lines between truth and fiction, attraction and manipulation, and ambition and obsession begin to blur—with dangerous consequences. Plays at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28 (OCAP) and at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.

And what's Halloween at Harbor Theater without a movie? We're keeping this PG film under wraps for now, but here's a little hint: Fans of classic comedy and a certain mad scientist might find this 1974 favorite particularly electrifying! Let's just say it's sure to be a monstrously good time. FREE admission. For more information about the festivities and our mystery film, email info@boothbaycinema.org for all the gory details.
"The History of Concrete" - (1 hour, 42 minutes) - A Something to Chew On presentation - Fresh off his acclaimed HBO series "How To with John Wilson," filmmaker Wilson turns his famously curious eye toward an unlikely subject: concrete. The world's most widely used building material is everywhere, especially in his beloved New York City, and Wilson sets out to make the definitive documentary about it. But after attending a workshop on writing Hallmark movies, he decides to give his decidedly unromantic subject an unexpected twist by applying the familiar formula of a made-for-TV romance.
What follows is a wonderfully unconventional and often hilarious journey filled with surprising encounters, offbeat humor, and observations about creativity, human nature, and the absurdities of modern life. As Wilson's artistic ambitions collide with the realities of the entertainment industry, "The History of Concrete" becomes about much more than sidewalks and skyscrapers. Part of Harbor Theater's Documentary & Dinner Series, this screening pairs the film with a playful, construction-inspired menu of "Things Construction Workers Like to Eat"—Sloppy Joes, coleslaw, and pound cake! Join us for one show only on Sunday, Nov. 1, with dinner at 6 p.m. and the film at 6:30. Dinner is $10 per person, plus regular film admission" $8 members; $12 non-members. Guests are welcome to attend the film without dinner, and reservations are not required.
"The film offers a thoughtful reflection on human nature and the cycles of decay and renewal that shape our lives. And while a documentary about concrete might not sound particularly entertaining, trust us—this one is anything but! - Critic Scott Tobias
