This week at the Harbor Theater
"The Roses" - (R; 1 hour, 45 minutes) - A reimagining the darkly comic 1989 classic "The War of the Roses" with a fresh take on love, power, and the unraveling of a marriage. When Oliver and Barbara Rose (Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman) decide to divorce after years of building a seemingly perfect life together, their split quickly spirals into an all-out war. Neither is willing to give up the sprawling home they once shared, and what begins as a battle of words escalates into a ruthless, escalating fight where no tactic is too extreme. Directed by Jay Roach, The Roses balances biting satire with emotional intensity, examining what happens when love curdles into resentment and possession becomes more important than happiness. Brutally funny and shockingly relatable, the film asks: how far would you go to win when the prize is everything you’ve already lost? Final screenings: Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2 p.m. (OCAP), Thursday, Oct. 16, 7 p.m.
"Eleanor The Great" - (PG13; 1 hour, 38 minutes) - June Squibb brings to vivid life the witty and proudly troublesome 94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein, who after a devastating loss, tells a tale that takes on a dangerous life of its own. Scarlett Johansson's directorial debut is a comically poignant exploration of how the stories we hear become the stories we tell. Plays at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17; Saturday, Oct.18 and Thursday, Oct. 23; and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19 and Wednesday, Oct. 22 (OCAP).
“The film allows [Squibb] a complexity rarely afforded to elderly characters. She radiates warmth in scenes with Kellyman, serving as a wise and witty grandmotherly figure, and exhibits sharp comedic timing when playing opposite Jessica Hecht.” – Sonia Rao, Washington Post
"Wyeth" - Exhibition on Screen: American Masters series - (2018 NR; 1 hour, 28 minutes) - One of Harbor Theater’s most popular annual programs, Exhibition on Screen returns this season, bringing the world’s greatest art and artists to life on the big screen. The series opens with "Wyeth" a visually stunning portrait of one of America’s most celebrated—and misunderstood—artists, Andrew Wyeth. Known for his hauntingly beautiful depictions of rural life in Maine and Pennsylvania, Wyeth’s paintings captured the quiet poetry of everyday moments while stirring deep debate in the art world. Through rare archival materials, family interviews, and access to the artist’s work, Wyeth explores the inspirations, controversies, and creative spirit that defined his career. One show only Saturday, Oct. 18 at 2 p.m.
Harbor Theater is closed Monday and Tuesday October through May with 2 p.m. matinees on Wednesday (OCAP – Open Caption Screening) and Sunday (regular screening). Shows nightly at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for children under 18. Member prices are $8 for adults and $6 for children under 18.
