I was really happy to hear from Wiscasset’s Lynn Maloney near press time Tuesday morning.

New developments on Wiscasset’s coaching front and on Monday’s closure of Wiscasset Community Center (now reopened) due to a scarlet fever exposure had already made our newspapers’ usual busy Tuesday morning busier, which happens sometimes. Then Maloney told us that, due to that WCC closure, St. Philip’s Church on Hodge Street opened its doors to Wiscasset Female Charitable Society, which was scheduled to have its annual potluck dinner Monday night, Jan. 30 at WCC.

As I told Maloney, it was wonderful, as always, to hear and be able to report on happy news, reflecting the great town and region we cover. A scarlet fever exposure is not happy news. The town’s and church’s swift response were.

As for the coaching matter, you can read on page 4 and online the official information we have received about it. The article lit up our Facebook page with comments taking various sides, outcries for what we did not dive into, because there are so many versions and claims, some anonymous, that we have instead chosen to keep it to the town’s and school department’s official information. If you feel differently than we did, or happen to agree with us, Facebook, Disqus and/or a letter to the editor for us to consider publishing are all options that await your consideration.

Week’s moderately positive parting thought: Thursday, Feb. 2, spring is 46 days away, according to days.to. I thought this would sound even better than a recent similar note, when spring was even further away. But with this week’s forecasted temperatures at press time, for around or below 0 F and way below it with the wind chill, somehow 46 days sounds too far off. How is this: We have made it to February, so spring is next month!
