Aug. 8, American Legion Post 36 gathered on Boothbay Common for the organization’s 15th annual community yard sale, bringing residents together while raising money to support veterans and community organizations.

Cathy Moroney, finance officer for Post 36 and president of the corporation, said the event is not primarily about how much money can be raised. “The event is less about making money. It gives the American Legion an opportunity to interact (with the community and tell about) what we’re doing,” Moroney said.

The yard sale was founded by David Patch, a past president of American Legion Post 36, who said giving back to the community is an important part of the organization’s responsibility to the people it serves.

“If we don’t do this stuff and raise money for the community, we’re not doing what we’re supposed to be doing as veterans,” Patch said.

Funds raised through the yard sale help support a variety of causes. The organization provides assistance to veterans in need, donates to community organizations and contributes to scholarships. 

For Patch, the event is also a way to keep the importance of local veterans visible. The community has long shown its appreciation for veterans, particularly those who have lived and served locally. That support can be seen throughout the area, including through the banners displayed around town honoring veterans and their service.

“I think we’re all in the mode of making sure the importance of the veterans and their contribution to the country and to the community is always out there,” Patch said.
