Southport Historical Society events
Join the Friends of the Southport Historical Society on Monday, Aug. 4 at the Southport Town Hall (361 Hendricks Hill Road) for 'Cookbooks as Historical Evidence', a three-part event including a talk, exhibit, and refreshments. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the exhibit and tastings, with lecture to follow at 7.
Old-fashioned refreshments made from 18th century recipes can be enjoyed starting at 6 p.m. On display will be cookware from the collection of the Hendricks Hill Museum, with historical background information as curated by museum volunteer Sigrid Kopf.
Featured speaker is Marieke Van Der Steenhoven, Librarian for Special Collections and Engagement, Bowdoin College. With an in-depth knowledge of over 700 early American cookbooks in the college's collection, Van Der Steenhoven will discuss cookbooks as evidence of the development of American social movements and culture.
