Southport Column: New and a bit nervous
Surprising no one, it rained on Saturday, but today the sun is shining, the breeze waves the wildflowers and the boughs of the trees, gently and calmly upon the island, one of the many reasons to make a life here. Some of you will know me, many will not, but it is my hope that by bringing this column back we can once again highlight all that bonds us together as the Southport community. As the decision to do so just firmly took place last evening, after a call to the former First Lady of the column, Leigh Sherrill, I have only a few items to share, but I wanted to introduce a system for the gathering of information that I hope will give all that want to be included an opportunity to do so.
While I will keep my ears and eyes open to events and opportunities, I will also set up a box at the Southport General Store into which you may place your story, or event, with organization name, hours, and a summary of what is to happen, or be celebrated, and a phone number in case further information is needed. I will collect these on Friday, allowing for crafting of the column by the deadline, which is Mondays at noon. We will test this out, see how it goes, and adjust if needed. So, look for the box at the General Store and help bring some news to life.
One place to get and share news, solve issues of world importance with good humor and comradery, hear tales, the occasional joke or song is the Southport Memorial Library Coffee Table, which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All are welcome, attendees arrive about 10 a.m., there is coffee, some sweet treats and in general good conversation, you, would be a nice addition. Please consider coming in for that as well as the many library offerings.
Sunday, June 22, 11:30-1 p.m. will be an Open House Luncheon to thank Leigh Sherrill for all she has done for the community while living on Southport. It will be held at the Southport General Store and will feature fabulous food and give all a chance to say thanks and spend time with neighbors and friends.
A few nerves will go along with the submission of this first column, not fearful ones, but some excitement and anticipation as we come together to shine light on all that makes Southport so special. Peace be with you all.
