The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor hosted its annual holiday potluck dinner and carol sing Wednesday night, Dec. 20, featuring Kevin Kiley and Friends – John Adams, Devin Dukes, Jason Hersom and Lynne McGhee.

The evening began with a potluck dinner with attendees bringing mains, sides, and dessert to share. The beautifully decorated Opera House provided a holiday backdrop for the performance and helped set the mood for the evening.

“This is one of my favorite nights at the Opera House. It’s like a warm family party,” said Kiley.

The concert drew a crowd of about 75. Professional vocalists kicked off the concert singing holiday favorites, some solo and some as an ensemble. Kiley played piano and called out songs for the performers and audience. Handouts containing lyrics were provided to encourage all to participate.

“Tonight is about singing and having fun, it’s not a time to care about how well you sing – all voices are welcome,” said Kiley.

Notable songs of the evening included “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” (Gannon, Kent 1943) heartfelt and moving, sung by Hersom, “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” (Peevey, 1985) jovially performed by Adams, “White Christmas” (Berlin, 1942) sung with soulful swells by Dukes, and McGhee roused the crowd early with “Jingle Bell Rock” (Helms, 1957). The full ensemble performed “The Maine Christmas Song” (Fullam, 1986), a crowd favorite.

This annual event is free in support of the venue’s commitment to community engagement. “We could not do what we do without the support of the community. It’s exciting what goes on here,” said Kathy Sherrill, Opera House executive director.

The Opera House has one more concert in 2023, Ellis Paul & Friends on Dec. 29, then the popular Open Mic Night series begins Jan. 5, and will run the first Friday of the month through winter in the upstairs bar. A full calendar of performances can be found at https://boothbayoperahouse.com/events/
