Sinclair, Gaffney win Edgecomb municipal contests
An incumbent and write-in emerged victorious May 16 during the Edgecomb Town Meeting referendum vote. Heather Sinclair retained her school committee seat by defeating challenger Maureen Heffernan, 189-122. Write-in candidate Cara Gaffney defeated Stuart Smith, 162-137, for selectman. Both seats are for three-year terms.
Incumbent Paula Swetland won re-election to the planning board as a write-in candidate. She defeated Michael Faas, another write-in candidate, 42-18. The planning board seat is a three-year term.
All incumbents won a one-year term for the following municipal positions: Jessica Mague, tax collector, 286; Claudia Coffin, town clerk, 301; Claudia Coffin, treasurer, 295; and Scott Griffin, road commissioner, 281.
Only one of the 43 town meeting warrant articles was defeated. Edgecomb voters rejected a proposal to join Wiscasset Water District, 102-165. All other articles passed overwhelmingly.
The closest vote was for fire department salaries. Article 18 requested to raise and appropriate $95,722.38 for Fire Department compensation and employer’s share of taxes. The fire chief's salary of $63,400 was included in the request. Voters approved the request, 182-108.
