Sinclair, Gaffney win Edgecomb municipal contests
An incumbent and write-in emerged victorious May 16 during the Edgecomb Town Meeting referendum vote. Heather Sinclair retained her school committee seat by defeating challenger Maureen Heffernan, 189-122. Write-in candidate Cara Gaffney defeated Stuart Smith, 162-137, for selectman. Both seats are for three-year terms.
Incumbent Paula Swetland won re-election to the planning board as a write-in candidate. She defeated Michael Faas, another write-in candidate, 42-18. The planning board seat is a three-year term.
All incumbents won a one-year term for the following municipal positions: Jessica Mague, tax collector, 286; Claudia Coffin, town clerk, 301; Claudia Coffin, treasurer, 295; and Scott Griffin, road commissioner, 281.
Residents defeated four of the 48 articles. Proposals to appoint the town clerk, treasurer and tax collector were all defeated by nearly 2-1 margins. Selectmen will continue to appoint these municipal positions to one-year terms.
Residents also rejected an option to join the Wiscasset Water District. The proposal lost 129-169. Residents approved the school budget validation referendum, 158-140. Residents also approved paving the Edgecomb Eddy School parking lot, 187-29.
