See local maritime films during Lobster Fest weekend
The Strand Theatre will screen two locally-produced maritime films, The Ghost Trap (2024) and Rockland: A Maritime Heritage (2022), from July 31 - Aug. 3, to coincide with this year’s Maine Lobster Festival held in Rockland.
"The Ghost Trap," based on the book by local author K. Stephens, is the haunting story of a young lobsterman who is forced to choose between right and wrong when his girlfriend suffers a traumatic head injury and a rival lobstering family sabotages his gear, sparking a deadly trap war. Written with sensitivity and rich description, this is a piercingly accurate depiction of a small Maine lobstering community. A Q&A with Stephens and local members of the production team will follow the Saturday, Aug. 2 at 4 p.m. screening. Stephens will also do a book signing. Showtimes: 1 p.m. Thursday, July 31 and Friday, Aug. 1; and at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 and Sunday, Aug. 3.
"Rockland: A Maritime Heritage," from filmmaker Dale Schierholt, was co-written with local author John Bird based on his book “Rockland Maine: Rise and Renewal.” The film chronicles the history of the city of Rockland from its settlement as a part of Thomaston to the city it is today, by tracing the ebbs and flows of its evolution through its ties to the sea. A Q&A with Schierholt and Bird will follow the 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3 screening. Show times: At 4 p.m. Thursday, July 31 and Friday, Aug. 1; and 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 and
Sunday, Aug. 3.
