The Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club welcomes Erin Mooney and Rachel Meyn from Safe Passage in Guatemala City on Thursday, Aug. 13 at our Clubhouse at 66 Montgomery Road.

For more than two decades, Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club has been a vital partner of Safe Passage. Safe Passage works at the root of migration in Guatemala providing opportunities for youth and their families living on the huge Guatemala City dump through education.

Executive Director Erin Mooney and Development Director Rachel Meyn will join Rotary to share how this community led work has grown and why it matters more than ever. Today, over 30 Safe Passage students are enrolled in college, 90 percent graduate from middle school in a country where only 40 percent reach high school. Come hear how Safe Passage, which was started in 1997 by a young woman from Maine, Hanley Denning, is proving that breaking the cycle of poverty is possible in just one generation. Many residents of the Boothbay region have traveled and volunteered at Safe Passage and can attest to the long-term, positive outcome the program has had on many people's lives, including their own.
