Right whale event at Harbor Theater
While Southern right whales show signs of recovery, their Northern cousins face mounting threats from ship strikes, entanglement, and industrial noise. Join us at 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 26 for a special documentary, “The Right Whale: Tales of Resilience and Hope” (54 minutes), followed by a discussion with the filmmakers Cheryl and Nick Dean, and Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences Senior Research Scientist Nick Record.
“The Right Whale: Tales of Resilience and Hope” celebrates the enigmatic lives of right whales as they navigate the world’s oceans. We follow scientists using cutting edge technologies as they strive to solve the puzzle of why some whales are thriving and others struggling, posing solutions to help ensure the whales can coexist with us. With intimate glimpses into their social lives and a heart-stopping rescue, this film captures the beauty, intelligence, and fragility of these magnificent creatures, and the race to save them.
Cheryl and Nick Dean are award-winning independent filmmakers and co-founders of Spindrift Images, a production company dedicated to telling powerful stories of the ocean and its wildlife. To amplify the impact of their films, Cheryl and Nick formed a 501c3 nonprofit, Spindrift Images Foundation to help bring about positive change for the ocean. Their documentaries, celebrated for their stunning imagery and compelling storytelling, have earned international acclaim and have been featured by the BBC, the UN World Wildlife Day Film Showcase, and on Capitol Hill.
Joining the Deans for a post-screening discussion is Nick Record, PhD, Senior Research Scientist at Bigelow Laboratory. Dr. Record’s work involves science translation, both for policy applications and for the general public, as well as education and community science. He serves on the Maine Climate Council and the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Team. He gives frequent talks and writes extensively including 2018’s The Uncertain Future of Right Whales: Saving endangered whales means crucial compromises in Maine Boats Homes & Harbors.
