Well-known throughout the Episcopal Church as a writer, retreat leader, spiritual advisor and teacher, The Rev. Martin Smith will lead services at All Saints by-the-Sea on Southport Island for the next two weeks. Holy Communion will be offered at both the 8 and 10 a.m. services on both Sundays. Mr. Henry Lowe will provide our music for all services. People of all faiths are invited to attend the services. 

Born in England, Rev. Smith was trained as a theologian and received his BA and MA at Oxford University. After ordination, he served several parishes as well as the Society of St. John the Evangelist, the oldest religious order for men in the Anglican Communion. He transferred to the American branch of the Society in 1979 where he completed three terms as Superior. From 2002-2006 he was on the staff of the United States Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. Rev. Smith served as associate rector at St. Columba’s Church in Washington, D.C. until retiring in 2012. Since then, he is in demand as a teacher and workshop leader where his engaging style and vast knowledge have enriched countless spiritual seekers. He has authored numerous books on contemporary spirituality. Maine holds a special place in his heart and he views the Boothbay Region as a special summer home.

Commissioned and authorized by The Rt. Rev. Thomas Brown, the Tenth Bishop of Maine, Rev. Smith wrote and copyrighted the Maine Eucharistic Prayer now being used in Episcopal churches and summer chapels across Maine.

Always a highlight of the season, Rev. Smith will lead a discussion of the scriptures and share spiritual insights on Tuesdays, Aug. 4 and 11 at 9 a.m. All Saints attendees as well as members of other area church are encouraged to attend.

All Saints by-the-Sea is on Southport Island on All Saints Road about two miles on the left driving south on Route 238. An Episcopal Church sign marks the side of the road. Parking is available along Route 238, or if necessary, in the limited number of handicapped parking spaces off All Saints Road. A golf cart will ferry persons from the handicapped lot to the church steps. On Sundays, the chapel dock is reserved for parishioners and guests arriving by boat. The very beautiful and simple wood chapel is open for quiet prayer and meditation during the week.
