By Hugh Wyman Howard III
My father and family’s service in the United States Navy inspired me to serve. I locked on this path when I was five years old. In high school, I applied to one undergraduate program - the United States Naval Academy - with no plan B. Everything I did growing up was to prepare me - e.g., rowing at T.C. Williams High School (of "Remember the Titans" fame) in Alexandria, Virginia, and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.
I was 17 years old on Induction Day - July 7, 1986 - day 1 at Annapolis, the commencement of Plebe Summer. Simpler time - few distractions. "Top Gun" movie elevated the naval service within the broader culture during the time.
Navy SEAL - for only 32 years. I served as the Commander of Naval Special Warfare Development Group during the period we led through the largest single combat loss in U.S. Special Operations history. How our team and families faithfully served our standard in this tragedy - honored our fallen - and stayed on mission stands out as my proudest moment of service.
The Navy shaped the ways I creatively solve hard problems and solve for complexity and risk to deliver non-linear outcomes. The Navy is a wonderful place to develop as a human being in defense of our great Nation. Humility and stewardship anchor our culture - humble in the face of complexity - stewardship in the sense of "leave the boat faster because you were in it.” An apolitical / nonpartisan force, servants of all Americans. Motto = The Deed is All - Not the Glory.
