Peppino D’Agostino concert Oct. 24
Peppino D’Agostino has been described by concertgoers as having “an aura” about him when he plays guitar. D'Agostino is an Italian-American guitarist who moved to America in 1985 and began his career by performing in the streets and on Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. He made his American recording debut in 1987 with Acoustic Spirit on Shanachie Records. D’Agostino will be playing at the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
A native of Italy, D’Agostino has made his considerable international mark as a musical artist on the guitar since he arrived in America 40 years ago. Acoustic Guitar Magazine describes him this way: “Since the ’80s, Peppino D’Agostino has created an expansive vision of the acoustic guitar as a concert instrument, tapping into not only the steel-string’s native idioms of folk, blues, and country but also nylon-string traditions from Italy, Spain, and Brazil. Like many fellow explorers of fingerstyle guitar, D’Agostino uses unorthodox tunings, percussion, and other extended techniques to open up new vistas on the instrument.”
About returning to the historic Opera House, D’Agostino says, “Every venue has its own voice—I try to listen before I play. Maine, and specifically the beautiful Opera House, brings a quiet, introspective feeling. I play with more space, more intention.” Asked how any given show is different from another, he says, “What changes is the dialogue between the place, the audience, and the music. Every time it's a little different and always new!”
In addition to his performing career, D’Agostino is a prolific teacher, creating lessons in recent years for TrueFire and Guitar by Masters, as well as interactive scores through Interlude. With his wife, Donna, he runs Music World Retreats, which offers music camps in the U.S. and Europe for guitarists as well as mandolin, ukulele, and violin players.
