Niall Janney inducted into the Maine Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame
Niall Janney, who grew up in Edgecomb and was a standout swimmer for the Boothbay Region YMCA Dolphins (1996-2002), will be inducted into the Maine Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame on Sunday, Oct. 12 at a ceremony at the Elks Club in Portland.
Janney swam competitively at the state and national level from 1996-2012, culminating in a US Olympic Trials performance in 2012.
As an age group swimmer in Maine, Niall competed as a member of the Dolphins and the Bath YMCA Long Reach Swim Club (2002-2008). During his YMCA swimming career, Niall set 12 individual and 5 relay state records, won 12 individual and 2 relay state meet titles, set 3 YMCA New England records, and won 10 YMCA New England titles across 8-and-under to senior age groups. He is a four-year YMCA Nationals qualifier who, as a senior in 2008, finished 4th in the 200IM, 8th in the 200 Fly, 12th in the 400IM, and 14th in the 100 Fly as an individual as well as a member of relays that finished 3rd in the 200 Medley Relay, 14th in the 200 Freestyle Relay, and 16th in the 400 Medley Relay.
While in the U.S. swim league, Niall set 12 individual state records and 4 relay records during his age group swimming career while qualifying for junior nationals four times and senior nationals 2 times. As of 2023, Niall held 21 short course yards, 26 short course meters, and 9 long course meters top 25 fastest performances all-time rankings for the state of Maine.
While attending Phillips Exeter Academy (2004-2008), Niall was a 4-Year Varsity Water Polo and Swim Team member. He was MVP and Captain in both sports his senior year. Also in his senior year, Niall set the school record for the 200IM (1:52.65), set the school and New England Prep School record in the 100FLY (49.63), was recognized as MVP of the New England Prep School Championship Swim Meet, and received honors as USA Swimming Scholastic All American and Boston Globe All-Scholastic.
Niall completed his swimming career at Harvard University as a 4-year member of the varsity swim team (2008-2012). During his sophomore, junior, and senior years, Niall landed Top 8 finishes at Ivy Championships in 400IM and 200Fly. In his senior year (2012), Niall broke the University of Pennsylvania pool record in 400IM, was recognized as CSCAA Scholar All American, and qualified and competed for 2012 Olympic Trials in 200 fly.
According to the organization’s website, there are 74 members in the HOF, including former BRYMCA swimmer John Waldman (inducted in 2010), all of whom have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to competitive swimming, competitive diving, and /or open water swimming. The HOF's membership includes: 42 swimmers, 20 coaches, seven divers, four officials and one open water swimmer.
The Bath Area YMCA is host to the physical Hall of Fame. The Hall contains a history of swimming in the state of Maine as well as plaques of all inductees.
