Lincoln Theater will welcome acclaimed “New Yorker” cartoonist Liza Donnelly for a special screening of her new documentary film “Women Laughing” on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. The evening will include a post-film conversation and Q&A hosted by local author and historian Heather Cox Richardson.

In “Women Laughing,” Donnelly explores her lifelong passion for women’s humor and cartooning through conversations, drawings, and laughter with a remarkable group of women who create cartoons for the iconic magazine “The New Yorker.”

Inspired by Donnelly’s acclaimed book “Very Funny Ladies,” and her own experiences as a cartoonist, the film examines the evolution of women’s voices in a field that has historically been dominated by men, featuring intimate conversations with some of today’s most celebrated New Yorker cartoonists. Among them are Roz Chast, Emily Flake, Sarah Akinterinwa, Liana Fink, Amy Hwang, and Bishakh Som.

Donnelly also speaks with Emma Allen, the magazine’s first female cartoon editor, as well as a group of emerging and established artists who share their creative journeys, challenges, inspirations, and approaches to their work. “Women Laughing” is a joyful celebration of creativity, resilience, and the power of humor. Through the voices and artwork of women cartoonists across generations.

Heather Cox Richardson has joined Liza Donnelly for a number of “Talk and Draw” sessions shared online. They also presented a talk on the Lincoln Theater stage in 2024, discussing women cartoonists and Liza’s “Women Laughing” film, which was in production at the time.

Heather is a history professor interested in the contrast between image and reality in American politics. She believes in American democracy, despite its frequent failures. Heather is also the author of several publications, including the recent book “Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America” (2023), as well as an online blog called “Letters from an American.”
