Mind, body and voice courses at Coastal Senior College
For 24 years, Coastal Senior College (CSC) has served lifelong learners in Lincoln and Knox counties. The College launches its 16-course Fall Semester during the week of Sept. 16–19.
Current and new members of the College are offered 10 in-person courses in locations throughout both counties. An additional six courses are offered on Zoom, available to members of the 17-location Maine Senior College Network statewide.
Veteran instructor Susan Borg offers a duo of courses this fall focusing on different fusions of mind, body and voice — both over six Thursday afternoon sessions at the BugTussle Annex in downtown Waldoboro.
Students in the course titled “Every Time I Feel the Spirit: Singing African American Spirituals” will learn to sing spirituals by ear as they were composed — songs for work, for family gatherings, and for worship created by enslaved people of many different African cultures brought to our country. “Singing Spirituals together brings us hope out of hopelessness, power out of powerlessness,” notes Borg.
A second course, “In and out of Kilter – Exploring Balance with Experiential Anatomy,” will focus on developing resilience by using resources we already have in our bodies. “Participants can expect to find gentle movement, respectful attention, and ideas that may stretch one’s imagination as we respond to the changes that come with age.”
Susan Borg was a member of the World Music a cappella group “WomenSong” and has been a student of Ysaye Barnwell, creator of “Singing in the African American Tradition” workshops. At Middlebury College Borg served as a team member in the development of the College’s experiential anatomy curriculum. She also taught experiential anatomy at Burlington College and St. Michael’s College in Vermont.
