Memorial Day parades
It has been a pleasure to record the Boothbay region’s Memorial Day parades for the newspaper for many years. With help from other staff members, we try to cover the ceremonies in Newagen, Southport, Boothbay Harbor, Boothbay and East Boothbay.
Most years, the turnout of citizens to watch and listen to the ceremonies has been good. We hope that continues this year. It’s one morning a year to remember those who gave their all for our country … barbecues can wait until the afternoon or evening.
We also hope that veterans who are able to march in the parades turn out. Many area veterans are getting up there in age so perhaps the younger veterans can join in, especially if this is their first time. Some veterans have marched in all the parades while some just choose to do certain ceremonies. The Chamber of Commerce trolley will also be available (hopefully) for veterans to ride in for the ceremonies. We hope the attendees give resounding cheers to the veterans in the parade.
Congratulations to Arthur Richardson who is this year’s parade Grand Marshal. Having known Arthur for decades, he has been a great representative of the region’s American Legion and Boothbay Harbor Fire Department. He, along with Ed Harmon, have provided a great service to homeless veterans by founding the Boothbay V.E.T.S. Inc. shelter program.
Remember to fly your flags at half-staff on Monday until noon, then back up to full-staff at 12:01 p.m.
Enjoy the day but take time to remember the fallen.
