The Boothbay Region Democratic Committee (BRDC), which represents Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Edgecomb, South Bristol and Southport, held its annual picnic at Boothbay Common on Saturday, Oct. 18.
According to BRDC, the goal of the free event was to foster a sense of friendship and community celebration as autumn descends on the region. This was partially accomplished with a potluck of homemade dishes, ranging from chowders, chilies, mac and cheese, and much more.
There were about 80 people, including Rep. Holly Stover (Maine House District 48), with many joining after the day’s earlier “No Kings” demonstrations in Wiscasset and Bath to protest the Trump administration, according to BRDC. Organizers for the nationwide event estimated seven million Americans participated from more than 2,700 locations across the country, per their website.
In a provided statement, BRDC organizer Kari Smith said, "It felt great to gather and relax with friends and (our) favorite fall dishes after a busy day of well-attended pro-democracy and pro-USA demonstrations throughout Maine and far beyond!"
The committee also raised $265 (plus a lucky penny), which will be donated to local food pantries.
“We saw a real need in our community to address food insecurity,” explained BRDC Secretary Leanne Pander. The organization has previously donated food and other goods to pantries.
