Lisbon stops Boothbay boys in basketball season opener
In a back-and-forth contest, Boothbay had victory within grasp, but it got away Dec. 5 versus Lisbon. The Seahawks held a two-point lead entering the fourth quarter but bad passes, bad shots and turnovers resulted in an opening night, 58-54, loss at Porter Gymnasium.
In the opening minutes, it looked like Boothbay was in for a good night creating turnovers, scoring in transition and draining threes, but Lisbon rallied, and trailed 16-13 after the first quarter. The two teams battled throughout, and Boothbay held a four-point lead with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter. "We should've held for last shot, but we didn't," Coach Dan Hallinan said. "We took a bad shot, and ended up leading by only two."
During the pre-season, Hallinan emphasized discipline as an important factor in success on the hardwood. But those lessons didn't materialize in the first game. "I thought our passing needs significant improvement. We had a good start, but became very undisciplined throughout the game. We took too many bad shots, and they edged us," Hallinan said.
Lisbon's zone defense also presented problems for Boothbay. Hallinan wanted his team to exhibit more patience and exploit the zone's weakness. "They (Lisbon) did what they had to do," he said. "We need to work on our half-court offense beating the zone. I thought Simeon (Bates) did a great job breaking it down, but we weren't able to fully make them pay."
On offense, Simeon Bates was the leading Seahawk scorer with 23. Harry Hinckley added 10. Other scorers were Peyton Barter, 7; Chase Licursi, 6; Ethan Clark, 4; and Aiden Locke, 2.
Boothbay (0-1) was set to travel to North Yarmouth Tuesday, Dec. 9 for a contest against the Panthers. NYA (0-1) lost,64-31, on Dec. 5 to Wells.
